A Galician pilgrim, wrongly accused of theft in Barcelos, is sentenced to hang. Before the judge at his table, he swears his innocence: « As surely as this roast rooster will crow before I am hanged! » The rooster rises on the dish and crows. The pilgrim is saved — and the Barcelos rooster, painted with hearts and flowers, has become the symbol of all Portugal: that of justice and good faith, which always end up crowing.
Un pèlerin galicien, accusé à tort d'un vol à Barcelos, est condamné à la pendaison. Devant le juge attablé, il jure son innocence : « Aussi vrai que ce coq rôti chantera avant qu'on me pende ! » Le coq se dresse dans le plat et chante. Le pèlerin est sauvé — et le coq de Barcelos, peint de cœurs et de fleurs, est devenu le symbole du Portugal entier : celui de la justice et de la bonne foi qui finissent toujours par chanter.
